Men Modern Dance Apparel – lot of questions?
I’m starting dance classes in a couple of days and it says I need
-Ballet and Jazz Shoes
-Appropriate dancewear
Is there a difference between ballet and jazz shoes? Can I wear one for either or something? And what should I get for dance wear? My friend advised tights and a leotard. Can I do without the leotard and just get tights and a tight shirt? Is there anything for tights vs footless tights? Do guys just wear the tights or is there some above or under it? Should I get a dance belt? Sorry for the multitude of questions but I’m really nervous since I’m definitely not prepared – I’ve never taken modern and such dance styles – so I need to buy it before I look like an idiot in class 
Yes, there is a difference between ballet shoes and jazz shoes. Are you taking ballet too? You do not need ballet shoes for modern. It is danced barefoot. No, you do not need a leotard. Standard wear for ballet class for men is white tee shirt, black men’s tights, dance belt (a must) and white socks and white or black ballet slippers. Yes you should wear footless tights for ballet class. You should check to see if there is a dress code for your modern class. If not, lose the tights and wear bike shorts or jazz pants and a form fitting tee shirt so the teacher can see your body. Make sure the pants are not too long so they wont get in your way. Tights and a tee is a little formal for modern class. You can wear the same thing for jazz class, but you will need jazz shoes. You should still get a dance belt. You wont need it for modesty if you are not wearing tights, but you will so you don’t hurt yourself. Here is a link to some information about dance belts that you will find helpful. There i also a link for tights, however if you are not taking ballet, the jazz pants or bike shorts would be fine.

If you click on my profile page, the pictures on the bottom are appropriate dress for a modern class. Jazz class usually you would wear a jazz pant which is longer.
