BALLET ARIZONA SCHOOL
What is your opinion on my list of Dance Colleges?

I’m going to be a senior in high school this year, which means I’ll be applying and auditioning for college dance programs.

I’m a well-rounded dancer, who’s attended numerous ballet summer programs including Joffrey Midwest and Joffrey NY to name a few.

These are my top 4 choices for college, as of now:
Univ. of Arizona, Point Park, Texas Christian, and Cincinnati

Other colleges on my list are SUNY buffalo, Marymount Manhattan, Oklahoma City Univ, Southern Methodist, and Chapman

Does anyone know anything about any of these schools? Or have you attended/are attending any of these schools?

I wanna make sure I’m making the right choice =) Your opinion matters! Thank you!

I already got you started with a list, so you know my opinion of the best, triple-emphasis schools:

Personally, I think that you should swap Southern Methodist to your top 4 and Texas Christian down in it’s place, but Texas Christian certainly has a good dance program. It just doesn’t offer enough jazz to call it a triple-emphasis program. I don’t get to hear a lot of feedback about Cincinnati, so I can’t speak about the strength of that program. And I don’t know where you got SUNY Buffalo as having a good program. You sure you weren’t thinking of SUNY Purchase, which has a top-notch program? SUNY Purchase is best known for modern and ballet and is not known as having a strong jazz component.

Reputations of dance programs aside, your next consideration needs to be what kind of academics you’re looking for. However, I’ll admit that my daughter didn’t think about academics and made her need for strong ballet, modern and jazz her key consideration. But then, we had also been visiting college dance programs since she was in 9th grade. Are you aiming to visit all 9 of these colleges in the coming year? If you can’t, then you really need to do some heavy-duty reading of these schools’ websites in order to form a mental picture of what they’re like to narrow your list: small/ large, urban/ suburban, local culture, cost of living, etc.

Go onto Ballet Talk for Dancers and read the threads of your top schools in their Colleges and Universities section:

Also network with anyone you’ve actually met (graduates of your studio, all your dance teachers, even the employees of your local dancewear stores) to ask if they’ve heard anything about the schools on your list. Just know that nothing can replace seeing the school in person, and preferrably in action, with students in classes or performing.
