BALLET ARTS CENTER
Which path should my second-grade daughter choose-arts or gymnastics?

She loves the flute, ballet, and gymnastics. If she gets an all-around score of 35.0 or higher at her next gymnastics meet a week from tomorrow, she will move from level 6 to 7 and be accepted into a great gymnastics school for next year. But, she also has ballet and flute auditions the following weekend to get accepted into SAB (School of American Ballet) and a prestigious music school also in the Lincoln Center. I know she will do wonderfully for all of them, so which should she choose?

P.S. She can do both ballet and flute at the same time.

What are the chances she will ever be a professional, paid ballerina? I think that unless it is very likely, the arts is a better choice. Gymnastics and ballet is just that, and they have very limited uses. If she learns flute, then she learns music in general and can start to pick up other instruments and write songs or whatever she wants to do. Music is something that you can do anytime, anyplace, and it will be constantly rewarding as long as she knows how to do it. Also, music opens up the mind a considerable amount, in my opinion. But then again, she may be good at flute but not musically inspired. My opinion, though, is definitely with music.

The primary appeal of dance movies is the dancing, with some added emphasis on the romance the art expresses. Center Stage wins on these counts, despite its reveling in overly familiar characters and formula plotting. Or maybe this reveling is responsible for what goofy fun this film is. The arduous task of becoming a professional ballet dancer is incarnated by many good-looking teens, all stock d…

That Oscar-winning title song buzzes in your ears long after the movie has stopped. The attraction here is youthful spirit and a pulsating score, because the weak story is merely a conduit for the song-and-dance numbers. The plot is every young woman’s daydream come true. Jennifer Beals holds down a macho job as a welder by day, but performs erotic dance numbers in a club at night. It’s not a stri…
