Theatre Royal Newcastle – More than just a theater
The Theatre Royal is one of the most prestigious and well known theaters in England, designed by local architects John and Benjamin Green. The Theatre Royal is one of the grade one listed buildings in Grey Street in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The theater first opened with a performance of the famous play by Shakespeare the Merchant of Venice on the 20th of February in 1837. Later the interior of the Theater Royal was destroyed by a huge fire that engulfed the theater in 1899. After a renovation and refurbishment by famous English theatrical architect Frank Matcham it was reopened and redesigned but with its exterior unchanged on the 31st of December in 1901.
Being a prestigious theater, the Theatre Royal host a multitude of varied performances throughout the year and it includes a variety of contemporary dance, ballet, musicals, opera and drama. With more than thirty performances held year round, it never fails to draw enthusiastic theater goers from all around England and beyond. Most of the shows and displays at the Theatre Royal are part of a National British tour and making a visit during the annual appearances of the Royal Shakespeare Company is most exciting and should definitely be looked out for.
The theatre has a substantial seating capacity, with audience seated on three levels. While the grand circle, upper circle and gallery each holding approximately 250 seats, the stalls can hold 501 seats, giving the Theater Royal a grand audience.
