BALLET POSITIONS POINTE

BALLET POSITIONS POINTE
I have always wanted to do ballet/pointe, should I?

I am 17 and have been a cheerleader (school and all stars) for years but I have always wanted to be a ballerina :) Is it too late? I am flexible and a lot of the cheerleading stretch positions (in the stunts) come from dance. And how long would it take to go on pointe?
Oh, I don’t want to be professional. This is just something I’ve always wanted to do. And Universities that offer Ballet as a class, is that a legitimate class or a joke?

from your age, i would say that you need to really devote your time and strength to ballet if you want to go pro. contrary to what people above said about taking a few classes a week to go pro, you need to take classes almost everyday at a quality school to succeed. even kids who start out when they are 5 years old take classes 5-6 days a week when they get to their late teens (advanced levels). if you aren’t accepted into a good ballet school, start out at a local school and advance your way up, but still taking numerous classes all week. you may need to practice continuously even when you are not in class. believe me, going pro is hard even for those who study in pre-professional programs from the young age of 8-9, so it would be pretty difficult for you, but you never know…so try, even if you don’t make it you’ll have gained a new skill.

how long it takes to get on pointe varies greatly. i started ballet at 11 and went on pointe in half a year, but i started out taking 4 hours a week right away and i was small and strong with a body that looks like an 8 year old… some people never gain the strength/agility/flexibility to go on pointe. i would say it usually takes about 1-3 years.

Ballet-Fit is for the adult beginner ballet student, “whether 17 or 70.” The authors admit the atmosphere in most ballet studios can be a bit intimidating, but say it needn’t be.
