BALLET RAIL

BALLET RAIL
Do have to be rail thin to be a good ballet dancer?

I know its good to be thin as a dancer but i’m not sure if i need to lose weight to be better. i’m 5′ 1” about 108 pounds and 13 years old. Most of the girls my age who dance are skinnier than i’m am so i dont know.

ABSOLUTELY NOT! At 13, first of all, you don’t need to worry about losing weight, you may still have a bit of baby fat but that’s okay, you’ll grow more and the fat will redistribute itself. To be a good dancer, rather than being thin, you need to have a high endurance level, a good sense of balance, and work on strengthening your leg muscles and your ankles. Do lots of stretching exercises and practice your basic skills. Concentrate on the position of your body and your arms as well as on what your feet are doing, and eventually the body and arm positioning and movements will become second nature to you. Most of all, practice, practice, practice, practice. Even 10 or 15 minutes of working on the five positions, three or four times a day is good; hour-long sessions once a day or so if you can manage it is better. Your local library should have a selection of “how-to” videos that you can borrow, or you should be able to rent one from your local video store; or pick up an instructional book on ballet at the library, the illustrations should help. Ask your mom if she would consider buying you an inexpensive, full-length mirror for your room so you can see what your feet and body are doing. If you are already enrolled in dance, don’t be afraid to ask your instructor for pointers and for extra help if you need it, she wants you to become the best dancer you can be. Practice sessions with a classmate can be fun, as well and you can help each other. Yeah, I know, but I took dance myself when I was a girl, and my daughter took it for several years as well. Break a leg! (Showbiz term for good luck)
