Studying in Leeds
Leeds is home to two major universities, the University of Leeds, which was one of the original six civic universities given royal charters at the beginning of the twentieth century. Before that there were only four universities in England and these were Oxford, Cambridge, London and Durham. You will also find Leeds Metropolitan University, one of the largest in the UK.
Living in Leeds
One advantage of living in Leeds is that the cost of living is not as high as it is in London or in other more southerly parts of the country so life is a little easier. Another is that as Leeds caters for so many cultures you will find something to suit everyone.
In Leeds city centre alone you’ll find a plethora of restaurants offering cuisine from different countries, cafés, pubs and bars to suit different preferences, nightclubs offering varied styles of music, as well as the diverse range of shops, arcades and markets to supply you with everything you could want or need.
There are a number of theatres in Leeds including Leeds City Varieties Music Hall where Charlie Chaplin once performed, the Carriageworks Theatre where the Leeds International Film Festival and the Breeze International Youth Festival are hosted, The Grand Theatre and Opera House, the Northern Ballet Theatre, and the West Yorkshire Playhouse.
There are also a number of museums and galleries, sports and leisure centres as well as places of worship that cover a whole range of faiths and beliefs.
Leeds has indeed got a lot going for it. There are beautiful parks, nature conservation sites and green areas in and around Leeds so not only do you get the advantages of city life but you have access to nature and all the benefits that brings too.
Professional football team Leeds United Football Club, also known as the ‘whites’ have their base in Leeds.
Getting around isn’t a problem either, there’s a free city bus that runs through the centre of Leeds and there’s also the Metroline, trains, buses and taxis all at your disposal. Nearby you’ll find Leeds Bradford Airport where you can fly to a number of destinations in the UK and abroad.
