FREE BALLET INSTRUCTIONS
“Modern” ballet?

Well, I recently asked a question regarding dance, and someone described something called “modern” (or “free”) ballet. It’s supposedly something like a style of ballet performed as theatre, with a lot of improv. It sounds interesting, but I can’t find any additional info on it. Maybe it was simply referred as the wrong name. If you know what this is and can give me even more detail as to exactly WHAT it is, I’d love it! Also, I don’t have very much formal dance instruction, so please warn me if this isn’t a good place to start. Thanks! ~ Mr. Wonderful

I’m a modern choreographer and dancer. Modern dance is another way of saying ballet with an edge. It keeps fundamentals of ballet but doesn’t have to go to the rules; like being so properly disciplined for instance. In ballet, pointing the foot and posture is necessary, however, modern can be a flexed foot and relaxed stance compared to standing tall. There’s different types of modern ballet:
1. Modern Contemporary
2. Modern Eclectic
3. Modern Avant-Gaurd
4. Modern Original/freestyle
5. Modern Abstract
The most well known modern dance company in the U.S. is Alvin Alley followed by Martha Graham and others. The best website I use personally doesn’t talk about what modern is but the companies out there. Just put modern dance in google and you’ll find a lot. Best wishes!
